What Is An Expander & How Does It Work?
Palatal expanders are custom made appliances whose purpose is to create more space in a person’s mouth through widening the jaw. This orthodontic appliance is made of two halves that fit over a number of the top teeth in the back of a person’s mouth and are held together by a screw in the middle. To activate the expander and begin moving the teeth to their ideal positions, the screw must be turned in small increments daily. Once the desired expansion is achieved, we will leave the appliance in for a few more months in order to stabilize the expansion. An expander is typically worn for three to six months, depending on your specific needs.
Expanders can help a number of common orthodontic problems, some of which include:
- Impacted teeth
Benefits of Orthodontic Expanders
Beyond just expanding a person’s jaw in order to address our patient’s orthodontic problems, expanders also provide other benefits like:
- Broaden the a persons smile, making it look more appealing
- Ability to limit the number of teeth that need to be remove
- Improved breathing
- Can shorten the overall orthodontic treatment time
